This year I have been obsessing over lifestyle sessions. I made it my mission in 2017 to go out of my way to build this side of my portfolio and really learn what it means to capture people authentically. Each lifestyle session I had the opportunity to photograph this year was special and I want to share exactly why this kind of session might be the perfect thing for you, too.
What is a Lifestyle Session?
To me, a lifestyle session is a non-posed way of capturing the things you do with the people you love in a meaningful way. Instead of engaging my client the entire session with direction and posing suggestions, I am VERY hands off. In fact, I want it to be as if I wasn't even in the room with you. This allows me to really watch the interactions, body language and emotion that make these moments YOURS. I always encourage my clients to think of something they love to do together- it might be something fun like fort building or baking. Or maybe it's something a little less glamorous like grocery shopping or laundry. Who cares? If those moments mean something to you, they mean something to me, too.
What Makes a Lifestyle Session Different?
Besides the lack of posed shots that you might typically think of when you imagine a photo shoot, lifestyle sessions are all about the details. The little smirks, the fingers wrapped around your son's favorite toy, the way your baby grabs onto your finger, the tiny toes up on your kitchen table helping you bake. It's about the little tiny things that are easy to forget over time. It's about finding a way to snatch those little details out of the moment and keep them in your memory forever.
Why Do a Lifestyle Session?
Maybe you're one of those people that hates the way you look in pictures. Let's be honest, so many of us are incredibly critical of ourselves on camera. I've found that what people really hate most about themselves in photos is their unnatural expressions or unnatural position. Or maybe your family has a tradition- something you've been doing for years, but haven't ever really captured. Or maybe that tradition is something you do ALL. THE. TIME. Like, laundry. It may not sound photo-worthy, but it's real life and that is something worth capturing. These lifestyle sessions take all of the pressure out of the situation and put you right back in the moment with the people you love and gives me the opportunity to photograph your true, honest, authentically happy self.
