When many people think about booking a family photographer, they picture toddlers running around, kids playing in the park, and those early years that feel like they fly by too fast. And while those stages are so important to capture, family photography doesn’t stop when your kids grow up. In fact, I believe it’s just as meaningful to document your family when your children are older—even in the teenage years.
Recently, I photographed a family here in Bellingham with three teenagers, and it was such a great reminder that every stage of life tells its own story. Teenagers bring personality, humor, independence, and sometimes a little bit of sass—and that’s exactly what makes these photos so special. These sessions highlight who your family is right now, in a season you’ll look back on and want to remember. Here’s what Mom had to say about the whole experience: “Katheryn is definitely an amazing photographer! I was not sure what to expect from family photos with two of the three kids being young adult ages. She made everything seem very easy and we are all so happy with the pictures! Even my picky teenage kids like the photos. She used our imperfect backyard landscaping in such a meaningful way. We felt natural and the pictures meant even more since we were in our own space. Her personality is warm and spirited. She is very easy to work with.”
As a Bellingham family photographer for over 15 years, I’ve worked with families of all shapes, sizes, and ages. I feel confident guiding groups into natural poses, encouraging fun interactions, and creating space for authentic connection. Whether I’m photographing young kids, teens, or multi-generational families, my goal is always the same: to create images that feel real, relaxed, and true to your family.
And yes—pets are always welcome! I love when families bring their dogs (or other furry friends) along for sessions. They’re part of the family too, and they make the photos even more personal.
Family photos aren’t just about marking one particular age—they’re about documenting your people in every stage of life. The teenage years might not be as chaotic as the toddler years, but they’re just as fleeting. Capturing this time together is something you’ll be grateful to have years down the road.
If you’ve been thinking about booking a session, I’d love to help you create images that reflect your family just as you are today. Reach out and let’s make it happen.
