This is my third installation of the Adventures of a Photographer series! I have to say, I am pretty proud of myself for making it to three. People, blogging is certainly not my thing. Well, I mean, I love to share photos- but WRITE!? Goodness, no. Thanks for sticking it out with me 🙂 I wanted to start this post by saying that I am constantly in awe of the places and opportunities that this job takes me. I am honored to be a part of so many amazing memories and really feel as though I have found a special calling in my life to be with people in special and unique ways. I can’t imagine doing anything else with my time and for that I feel unimaginably lucky.
Over the last few years I have had many magical opportunities to travel for work. Sessions all over Washington, wedding on the Oregon Coast, a wedding and trash the dress session in Hawaii to marketing work in Austin, family sessions in Phoenix, a wedding in a small town in Northern Wisconsin, an elopement in the San Juan Islands and various sessions in the Leavenworth area. These opportunities are exactly what my dreams have been made of since I started my business seven years ago. The chance to experience new places, new people and new venues. To grow and learn and reignite that creative spark in my business through travel. I think that, as a consumer, this is an incredibly valuable trait in the photographer you choose to work with. It shows flexibility, excitement, commitment and a deep love for the work they do no matter where they are. As with any job a little change of scenery can refresh and re-inspire which gives YOU, the fabulous client, the fresh look and gorgeous images you deserve.
That’s not to say that this traveling business is for everyone. Over the last few years I have learned so many things about what it means to travel for work, how to plan and pack accordingly and how to roll with the punches. Traveling to photograph special events isn’t everyone’s cup of tea and that is something you as the client should know up front. Is your photographer organized? Do you feel comfortable chatting with them about fine details? Do they make you feel at ease and confident in their abilities to handle the travel AND the challenges of a new location? These are all important aspects. I have learned that, for me, that opportunity to travel is essential to my creative process and an incredible connection I get to share with these special clients. I thrive in new spaces and love to push my creative limits. This special time deserves a photographer ready and excited about the job ahead and equally as excited about building a meaningful bond with you!
Destination weddings can mean so many things- A day on the beach in Hawaii, that old family barn in the county, the lake where you two first hiked to together, the theater you saw your first show at… Venues are important. You want a photographer who will recognize that, appreciate that and oogle over that venue’s little details just as much as you do. Sure, larger venues have preferred vendors lists and those are fantastic tools in facilitating your search, but maybe those photographers don’t speak to you? Maybe you are looking for someone with fresh eyes and an outside-the-box kind of approach? Well, consider finding the photographer that fits YOU and gets you excited about the experience of creating beautiful images in a new place together.
Choose the photographer you love and you will never regret it or the photos you have for the rest of your life.
