Let’s talk engagement sessions! Why are they important? What are they for? Why should every couple do them? Maybe you’re on the fence about an engagement session. This happens for all sorts of reasons: Maybe photos really aren’t your thing, but you know you want photos of your big day. Maybe money is tight, I mean, weddings are EXPENSIVE! Maybe your fiance hates the idea or you have a zit on your nose or you just flat out don’t want to take the time to do them. Whatever the reason, let me tell you why I think they are a major must have.
1. Getting Comfortable in Front of the Camera
Let’s just be real here- for most of us (myself included), being in front of the camera is extremely stress inducing. It’s hard to know how to act, where to put your hands and what to do with you body. Choosing to spend some time with your photographer before the wedding day gives everyone the chance to get acquainted, to build a rapport and to find angles and authentic poses that fit you! A good photographer knows how to put you at ease so they can get those candid-style shots we all want. The best part is that once the big day rolls around, you already know what to expect from your photographer and poses that you liked which eliminates a ton of anxiety!
2. Give Feedback!
Working together before the wedding day gives you the chance to review the engagement session photos and give your photographer feedback! I highly encourage all feedback from my clients and this open communication allows me to have the best understanding possible of your likes, dislikes and goals. If there’s a pose you loved during your e-session, we can replicate it! If there’s a pose you hated, now we know and we won’t be doing that one on the big day 🙂
3. Build a Relationship with Your Photographer!
You spend a LOT of time with your photographer on your wedding day. One of the best parts of my job is building friendships with my clients and the engagement session is a huge part of that relationship. There are going to be a million different things happening on your special day and feeling comfortable with your photographer is SO valuable. We are there while you’re getting ready, hugging your dad, hanging out with your friends, seeing each other for the first time, walking down the aisle, signing your paperwork, dancing your butt off. Your photographer should feel like an old friend you can trust.
4. Use the Images for Save the Dates, Decor + More!
Engagement photos are an awesome way to share this special part of your life with people near and far! You can use the images on save the dates, on your wedding website, in a guest book, in your invitations- whatever! There are so many ways to utilize these photos and give your day a personalized touch!
5. It’s Fun!
To some of you you this might sound crazy, but engagement sessions are FUN! I always encourage my clients to choose locations that mean something to them to really make the session unique. We’ve gone to mountaintops, private homes, family cabins, beaches, favorite breweries and beyond for our couples just to find the perfect location that makes them shine.
