Fall is one of my favorite times of year, quite possibly my very favorite, but I don’t want to discount how much I absolutely love the summer sunshine in the Pacific Northwest. However, the colors of the leaves, the crisp fall air, the pumpkins, the holidays, people coming back together after a season of traveling.. I love all these things an awful lot. I also really enjoy photographing people in the fall – the softer light, the colorful backdrops and the cooler days all suit me and my style really well. This is the time of year where clients are always asking for recommendations about the best places to take photos around Bellingham to get those fall colors. Here are my current top three!
1. Hovander Homestead Park: The truth is, I don’t know if any other park near Bellingham comes close the the incredible fall colors you can get at Hovander. This is technically in Ferndale, not in Bellingham, but it is well worth the 20 minutes. The giant trees lining the entryway all change to gorgeous orange, red and yellow hues. The trees lining the edges of the park all turn lovely shades of yellow, even the trees along the parking lot and the large field offer lovely reds and oranges. Combine that with the big red barn and and you’ve got a quintessential fall location. Great for families, multi-generational families thanks to the flat terrain of this location, headshots, maternity photos, couples/engagements and wedding days! You can even rent their cute little covered area for events.
2. Lake Padden: I love that this park can offer so much variety. From the tree lined paths to the lake access and the wooded areas that offer gorgeous speckled light – this is another local favorite that is also super dog friendly. Great for families, one year sessions, couples, headshots, maternity photos and pet sessions!
3. Woodstock Farms: One of the only parks in town where you can see the train tracks and the bay all in one place! I love the overlook at Woodstock Farms, but there are also some lovely wooded areas around this property and we as some lovely originl buildings offering a lot of unique character. The biggest consideration for this location is that you do need to walk down a pretty good hill to get all the way down to the flat area where you can overlook the water which isn’t always best for young kids, elderly family members or people who just don’t love a little hiking during their session. If you and your crew are willing to make the trek, it’s great for families, couples, headshots and wedding days!
