There are so many fun places to explore in the summertime in the Pacific Northwest and we’ve certainly got our staples. From hiking and ferry rides to berry picking and swimming in glacier water – find our top five places we hit every summer below!
1. Go to Clayton Beach!
Clayton Beach is one of the most unique beaches in Whatcom County in that it’s ALL sand and beautiful sandstone rock faces! This spot takes a little bit of hiking to get to, but once you’re there, it’s perfect for exploring tide pools, enjoying the sandy beach and a beautiful view of the ocean. Dogs allowed, so bring your furbaby for the fun!
2. Hike at Heather Meadows at Mount Baker!
An absolutely beautiful area any time of year, but I especially love it here in the summertime. You walk down a fairly large hillside either down a long trail of stairs or a long winding path that leads you to a small lake and stream. I would consider this a fairly easy hike if you have experience with hiking in the PNW. Well maintained trail, stunning views of the mountains and lakes, a cute little bridge. Would definitely suggest doing this on a weekday if possible to have the least crowds possible. Highly recommend! Click here to read about other awesome hikes in the area including Artist Point!
3. Ride the Ferry to the San Juan Islands!
A day trip down to the San Juan Islands, or even better a whole weekend, is totally possible from our sweet little Bellingham spot! Just be sure to make a reservation ahead of time for the San Juan Cruises and decide on the island you want to visit. We love them all, but San Juan Island specifically is easily walkable right from the ferry dock, so it’s perfect for walking on if you want to! If you do want to explore the other side of the island, you can either drive your car on OR rent these awesome little red scooters from Susie’s Mopeds, just a short walk from the ferry, and make your way over there!!! Could not recommend this more! Click here to read about more fun spots to hit on this island!
4. Visit Newhalem and Lake Diablo!
Probably our VERY favorite summer activity not too far from town – The little town of Newhalem and the adjacent Lake Diablo – some of the most beautiful scenery within a 2 hour drive. Newhalem has a small convenience store, a parks and recreation location, a cool old train and a few aprks for kids to play at and an awesome little hike along the river with a little waterfall! A pefect place to stop and picnic and explore for a little while. Plus, continue the drive just a little bit further and head into the town of Diablo for a quick dip in the glacier cold water or head up to the viewpoint for an incredible view of the lake!
5. Go Berry Picking!
There are SO many great U-Pick farms nearby. We went and picked raspberries at Barbie’s Berries, but the blueberries are coming into season and there are tons of farms to choose from!
