I had the extreme delight of working with Golden Glen Creamery on photos of their butters, cheese curds and various different flavors of amazing cheeses!
The Project
The goal was to find the personality of each different cheese flavor and create images that were unique and engaging to each product. There were a total of 19 cheeses, 5 cheese rounds, 2 cheese curds and 6 total butters. This required a significant amount of pre-planning to ensure that scenes were cohesive, but not redundant and that we stayed within our timeline.
The Challenge
I’m not sure how many of you have ever had 75+ pounds of cheese in your home at once, but you start to find things out about each cheese very quickly. For one, cheese loves to sweat, so timing this session well was important and having enough cooler and fridge space to accommodate all of these cheeses between scenes was equally as important.
Another more stylistic and less literal challenge was working with nearly visually identical products. We included 4 different types of cheddar cheese in this session that had no individual identifying ingredients, so I had to get creative about how to slice and style each type to differentiate and give each cheddar its own look. Thanks to that significant my pre-shoot planning, I had drawn out the props, cutting styles and layouts I intended to use for each individual type so that I could efficiently work through each scene.
The Takeaway
In total we photographed 6 butters, 19 cheeses and 2 different types of cheese curds in the studio on this afternoon taking me about 5.5 hours of time. I have to say that ALL of these cheeses were absolutely delicious, but my favorite was the cheddar tomato!
Enjoy, cheese lovers! And get some of this in your belly as quickly as possible! Want to see more cheese? Check out Appel Farms Cheese here!

Is lavender cheese a real thing?
HA! I asked myself the same questions before this session 😉 Turns out it’s very real and VERY delicious. Just a slight hint of lavender taste!! Wonderful with honey 😀
