Holly’s Meat Pies are the best pasties in Whatcom County and, as the wife of a Yooper, I know what I’m talking about! Holly is such a genuine person and has a deep passion for serving fresh, delicious food with a think local first mindset. She focuses specifically on “locally sourced, sustainably raised meats and fresh vegetables that show in every bite!” It was such a treat to work with her, hear her story and really connect with another passionate business owner in Whatcom County! If you know me, you know I love working with local businesses and you can read more about why here!
The Challenge
The biggest challenge we faced in photographing the pasties was that they can sometimes require a little extra styling love and attention to detail to really be sure and showcase the wonderfully stuffed pockets and their ingredients in an enticing and beautiful way. Allowing the insides of the pasties to be the hero of the scene was important and we needed to find a good way to bring out the fresh ingredients, bright colors and freshness in an appealing way! To do this, we were sure to include lots of fresh herbs and vegetables, particularly those that offered bright colors and utilize the flakey crusts to add texture and interest to each shot. We were sure to cut the pasties open, take bites out of them, cut and slice so that the insides could be visible and invite customers to get a better idea of what deliciousness awaits them! We added side salads and beverages in some scenes to create the easy, at-home meal look Holly was going for.
The Project
Holly needed a variety of different photographs for her upcoming rebrand from headshots in her kitchen space to lifestyle product photos of her pasties. We began our time together in her kitchen where she shared with me the typical process for making the MANY different flavors of meat pies she offers. This was a great way for me to get to know her better and understand her process and passion for her product. She tried on a few different outfits, we got lots of different photos of her in-action and posed in her kitchen space!
From there, we packed my car full of all the pasties in multiples and I was back to the studio! Prior to this date we’d had a chance to walk through the products, ingredients and timeline, so my studio was prepared with everything we needed for this portion of the shoot to start right away and run smoothly!
The Takeaway
Holly was able to start using these images right away on her website, in marketing campaigns and in her social media content to showcase her delicious food and bring new customers through her door. Here is a direct Google review from Holly about our time together!
“It was a difficult decision to make, who to work with to help tell my story. Katheryn was recommended to me by several people I respect and upon looking at her particular style I felt she was the person to reach out to. Her prompt response, enthusiasm and complete professionalism confirmed my feelings that I had chosen well. As we communicated and made a plan for the what, where and how the photo shoot would unfold, it was so nice to feel she understood what I was striving for.“
Katheryn was able to take in a lot of information once we were working together in person. She heard my concerns as well as my passion for cooking and my commitment to a farm-to-table, old-fashioned country feel. I am so happy with the results! I am already looking forward to the next time we can work together. She is fantastic!”
