The Project:
Tobey of Lamination Station LLC got his bakery going a mere for months ago, but he’s been working in the land of baked goods for many years. We’re so lucky to have such a talented and passionate baker bringing unique and delicious baked goods to the Bellingham area and I was stoked to get these fluffy dough pillows in front of the camera! Lamination Station does not have a storefront, but rather Tobey bakes and delivers boxes of treats to cafes, restaurants and other bakeries all over town. He approached me about 1) photographing him, baking away, to help connect him with his target audience and 2) photography that he could utilize on his wholesale website to streamline the ordering process for his customers. He wanted photos that showcased some of the ingredients, highlighted the incredible lamination of the different pastries and would give customers a clear understanding of what they were ordering. He also noted that photos needed to be in primarily horizontal format in order to work on his upcoming website and knowing this up front meant that I could create images that would work for exactly his needs!
The Challenge:
The biggest challenge in working with laminated baked goods is being sure to properly capture the many layers of lamination inside each different pastry and creating the proper light to do so. I wanted to evenly light the interior and exterior of the pastries to show the flaky exteriors and the fluffy interiors, so I had a large softbox camera left over my Godox AD600 Pro flash placed a few feet from the table and added a white bounce card camera right, directly across from the light, when doing those tight interior shots with my 100mm macro lens.
The Takeaway:
The final photo collection included a series of lifestyle shots of Tobey doing his thing in the bakery and ten unique pastries and some group shots taken in the studio. I can’t wait to see these go live on his site to help connect his business with hungry people looking to eat incredible pastries!
