I had the absolute pleasure of working with Marci and Colby, owners of Slice of Heaven Bakery + Cafe to show off their new brick and mortar storefront space near downtown Bellingham! While I have been working with Marci for many years, it’s been a studio capacity rather. It was so cool to see their vision for this space come to life and I am SO THRILLED Marci’s incredible baking has a permanent home in our little town. The depth of flavor and quality of her desserts is undeniably wonderful and we are lucky to have her. They offer everything from custom cakes and cupcakes to daily offerings of baked goods including varying bars + cookies, cupcakes, cake slices and so much more! They’ve even got sandwiches, breakfast options and the best mac and cheese you’ll ever have in your life.
The Challenge
This project had a few main challenges: one being the very long and constantly changing menu. We needed to be sure to capture a variety of images that would encompass breakfast, lunch and all their dessert offerings. Additionally, since Marci specializes in custom orders, we needed to be sure to show off as many different baking skills as we could. Lastly, we wanted to capture overall photos of the space, but wanted the food photography to really focus on the products with minimal distractions.
The Project
To make all of this happen, we worked together to create a detailed list of the different foods and desserts that would need to be prepared and customized a shot list and timeline to their overall needs. Onsite that day, we started with photos of the cafe and once we’d completed this, I brought in a few backgrounds that worked well with the aesthetic of the cafe to do some more detailed food photography. I set up some additional lighting to be sure we got the light and bright style they were hoping to achieve. I had an assistant from the cafe there with me throughout the session to help collect different ingredients, items from around the cafe and to help with clean up and resetting so we could be as efficient as possible. We worked through a huge variety of items both individually and in groups over the course of about 3 hours.
The Takeaway
The project yielded 156 final images that Colby and Marci have been able to use on their website, social media, print ads, their Google listing and so much more. Thanks to the thoughtful and strategic shot list, the variety of photos have provided longevity and will continue to work for their business needs for a long time to come. These photos align perfectly with past images taken of Marci’s baked goods in in the KMP Studio giving them a huge arsenal of imagery for all their marketing needs!
