Being able to offer my clients the option to utilize my studio space is a huge bonus when it comes to photographing food and small products. Not only does it make it easier for me to have all of my props, backgrounds and supplemental lighting equipment easily on hand, but it makes the whole experience simple for my client as well. All you need to do is either deliver your product to me or join me onsite while the session takes place! Lots of people have been inquiring as to what is actually included in the the use of my studio and why I charge a fee. Generally speaking that fee is meant to cover the use of my non-perishable items that I have acquired over my years doing this kind of work. This means that you’d have access to things like props and backgrounds without having to source these items yourself. This is really valuable to clients that are still working to find their brand and style OR makes it very easy for a brand to recognize if they align with my style! This also allows for me to continue to acquire prop items that fit the style of my work and to continue to offer unique pieces. Lastly, that fee helps pays for that extra time I spend prepping the studio space and cleaning up the inevitable mess that comes along with this kind of work so that my client doesn’t have to!
Below are some examples of items that are available to you when utilizing the KMP studio.
1. Backgrounds
This includes a variety of purchased and homemade backdrops that are unique to my collection. During the planning phases of each session one of the first things we will discuss is color scheme and vibe. We want to choose backgrounds that compliment your look and brand. Look closely at the images below and forget about the subject, but focus on the backgrounds. Every one is different and offers a certain emotion.
2. Hard Props
Everything from dishes, bowls and cake stands to silverware and cutting boards. Propping is incredibly important to telling the story of your food or product. I have an extensive collection of items on hand in the studio that may will work well for your brand, but sometimes we work together to collect specific props that speak directly to your food or product and help tell the story.
3. Soft Props
Napkins, tin foil, parchment, bits of paper… those other elements of an image that lend movement and flow to a photo. See if you can spot them below!
4. Lighting + Full Kitchen + Creative Expertise
On top of having access to all of these physical items in my studio, working in my studio space allows me to have easy access to my entire off camera lighting toolkit consisting of several different kinds of flashes, diffusers and modifiers in addition to the great natural light my space offers most of the year. My studio space is located right off of my kitchen giving us access to an entire kitchen space to prepare dishes, cut and style ingredients and more! I love this layout particularly because it allows my clients or assistants to be right beside me as we’re talking through the shoot as it unfolds. It also allows you to see what I’m doing and be part of the experience if you want to watch me style, light and shoot. I’ve been working with food since 2013 and always bring a fresh perspective and creative ideas to your food or product and I always love input from the Client to ensure we’re getting exactly what you’re hoping for!
What’s NOT included in a Studio Session?
Perishable or natural items. Often times a session will require additional ingredients, flowers or other natural, perishable elements to set the whole scene. Fresh produce, spices and flowers are the most common things we need to help add color and interest. We work together to build out a very detailed list of the necessary items and the Client either brings them along on the day of the shoot or reimburses me for doing the shopping!
