Rice Krispy treats have got to be one of the best snacks out there – right!? They’re so easy to make and by adding just a few simple ingredients, you’ve got a whole new flavor profile on your hands with that same great squishy, crunchy texture. They’re certainly one of my favorite foods to photograph. I love playing around with different lighting scenarios for these treats showing off their unique consistency or bringing in fun ingredients to show their diversity. Below are three different Krispy flavors I’ve played around with recently with tips for your next Krispy session!
Rice Krispy Food Photography Tip #1: Think MACRO.
I recently purchased the Canon 100mm F2.8 Macro Lens and it is absolutely blowing my mind. This lens has the flexibility of acting like a macro lens OR being able to take photos from a distance, all while maintaining incredible crisp edges and gorgeous, smooth bokeh. I loved playiung around with macro shots of these Lucky Charms Rice Krispies! This macro approach really allows the viewer to climb right inside your food and really feel the texture and consistency. With a simply 90 degree light setup and a white bounce card, I could maximize the shadows and highlight the gooey weave of the treats.
Rice Krispy Food Photography Tip #2: Embrace the Negative Space!
I’ve been working with food for many years now and I’ve certainly been known to spend, arguably, too much time styling a scene to the point where it starts to become a little bit cluttered or overly messy. There are definitely times in which keeping it simple will really benefit you, your client and the message your photo is sending. These Oreo Krispies were meant to highlight the Oreo cookies and I wanted the viewer to focus mainly on that ingredient. This color scheme was fairly monochrome, so in order to add interest, I was intentional with the negative space and added sprinkles of Oreo bits around to really highlight that specific ingredient.
Rice Krispy Food Photography Tip #3: Consider the Season!
These Chai Spice Krispies were a delicious Fall recipe! I wanted to highlight the feeling of Fall, so I busted out the burnt red backgrounds, the fall flavor profile and the warm tea. I often look to my color wheel to think about colors that fall within a specific emotion and these warm tones speak Fall to me.
