Bittersweet Chocolates, located in Olympia WA, had been looking for a food photographer in Washington that could help them create a mix of lifestyle images of their product, specifically around the upcoming Mother’s Day holiday, and a few images of their boxed and single truffles on a white background to add to their current online store. I couldn’t wait to work with these chocolatiers and get their beautiful product in the studio!!
The Challenge
The biggest challenge in working with truffles like this is that they are SO shiny! A little bit of shine is okay, particularly for the lifestyle shots, but we didn’t want the shine to take away from the product in the product images. I had to be sure to diffuse the light, use enough lighting from different angels and varying bounce cards to get the right look. I was so happy to have the owners in the studio with me so we could go over photos together and I could get their immediate feedback to be sure we were getting the look they wanted!
The Project
We had a thorough pre-session strategy meeting to be sure we had a strategic timeline and extensive grocery list outlined for this shoot. Once the team arrived, we pulled the individual chocolates and truffle box sets first to get the product shots completed. From there we moved right into the lifestyle setup for their Mother’s Day look which included my light pink background, florals, wine and ribbon! Once we had the lifestyle scene set up the way we wanted, with a specific focus on being sure it could work as the banner on their website, I was able to get a whole collection of images from this same setup – perfect for social media content!
The Takeaway
I was able to deliver exactly what my client had been looking for and kept our studio time within their budget thanks to our strategic planning and my experience in manipulating light. They were then able to immediately use those photos to insert into their online store and to promote their Mother’s Day specials!
