There’s something truly magical about photographing multi-generational families. As a photographer, getting to witness and capture the connections between grandparents, grown siblings, grandkids, and all the beautiful, sometimes chaotic moments in between is one of my favorite parts of this job.
This sweet family session at Lake Whatcom was the perfect example of what makes these sessions so special. Everyone showed up ready to laugh, play, and enjoy their time together, and the result was a gallery full of joyful, sun-drenched moments that tell a story far beyond just one afternoon.
Why Book a Multi-Generational Family Session?
It’s not often that families can get everyone in the same place at the same time. Whether it’s for a family reunion, a special birthday, or just a summer get-together, these sessions are a chance to freeze time and celebrate the people who mean the most to you. Grandparents with grandbabies, siblings reunited, and cousins playing—it’s a chance to create memories that span generations.
Photos like these aren’t just for the holiday card (although they definitely make great ones!). They’re heirlooms—images that get framed in hallways, passed down, and cherished for years.
What to Expect During a Family Photo Session
When you book a multi-generational session with me, we make the most of our time together by capturing:
- Full Group Portraits: Everyone together, smiling and snuggled up. We’ll find a pretty patch of light (like this gorgeous wooded trail!) and take the classic “everyone looking at the camera” shot—but we’ll also get some candids and in-between giggles too.
- Individual Family Groupings: Each smaller family unit gets their time in the spotlight. That way, everyone walks away with portraits they can call their own.
- Individual Portraits: Whether it’s just the grandparents, the grandkids, or a quick couple’s shot—these little moments are what round out the story of your family.
- Custom Requests: Have something in mind? We’re always up for ideas! Some families want photos of siblings together, just the kids, or a special generational portrait. I’m here to make it happen.
Why Summer Is the Perfect Season For Family Photos
Here in the Pacific Northwest, summer is prime time for family photos. Long, golden evenings and lush green backdrops make everything feel a little more magical. The weather is (usually!) on our side, and everyone’s schedules are a little more flexible. Whether you’re local or gathering in town for a visit, this season gives us so much room to play and explore beautiful outdoor locations.
