Some photo sessions feel more like hanging out than being photographed, and this Lake Whatcom session was exactly that.
This was my second time working with this family, which always makes things feel extra easy from the start. There’s already trust, familiarity, and a shared understanding of how the session will flow—less posing, more movement, more real moments. They love candid photos, so the plan was simple: let the kids be kids and let the rest unfold naturally.
We met at Wildwood Cabins on Lake Whatcom, a private property where the family spends part of their year. It’s a place that already feels like home to them, which set the tone for a relaxed, easygoing session. Being in a familiar space allowed everyone to settle in quickly, focus on each other, and move through the afternoon without anything feeling forced.
From the beginning, the session was full of motion. Ring Around the Rosie turned into laughter-filled chaos. There was chasing, playing tag, splashing near the shoreline, and eventually everyone ending up in the lake together. The kids had the freedom to run, get wet, and be silly, which is exactly when the best moments happen. Those in-between glances, the spontaneous hugs, the belly laughs—you can’t plan those, and you don’t want to interrupt them.
What I loved most about this session was how naturally the generations blended. Grandpa and Grandma soaking it all in, parents fully present, and three kids completely themselves. No one was worried about the camera, which is always the goal. When families feel comfortable enough to forget they’re being photographed, that’s when the images start to really mean something.
After the session, Grandpa shared this review, which perfectly captured the heart of the afternoon:
“This photo session with Katheryn was without a doubt one of the best experiences I have had with any photographer. Her feeling and almost being part of our family while taking the photos was an exceptional experience. Thanks, Katheryn for this wonderful afternoon at Whatcom Lake.”
Sessions like this are a reminder that multi-generational photos don’t have to be stiff or overly structured. They can be playful, relaxed, and full of life. The result is a collection of images that feel honest—photos that show what this season of family life actually looks like.
If you’re dreaming of a family session where your kids can run free, grandparents can be included without pressure, and the focus is on real connection, a candid family photo shoot might be the perfect fit. Especially if you’re open to a little lake water, a lot of laughter, and letting the day unfold as it will. Get in touch and let’s take some gorgeous family photos!
